Question:
post/mail I like to write papers, so you could let me be astri, unless you’re talking about a dissertation. (Of course, depending on the topic, I may not know much about what you are writing ….) (:
That never stopped me from writing papers and being clueless
nope, not a dissertation. just a dumb term paper. you could write it if you want. got piles of papers here waiting :) can you fit it in between plumbing RC’s bathrooms and hanging the doors? Well, so far RC hasn’t invited me to move in with her, except that Jaime wants me to live in the computer, which seems kind of cramped and I really doubt that I could do much plumbing or door hanging while stuck in the computer. (Hey, RC, how big is your computer anyway? Is it just a PC or do you have one of those really big ones?)
Well, I think what I said was I can’t invite anyone to move in until we have a house because the apartment is _way_ too small! But, we have a subfloor so there is _some_ room that we can let you stay in. Of course it’s getting cold… maybe you’ll want to wait until we have windows and drywall? We have a very big ‘mainframe’ computer _and_ a PC _and_ a regular computer (a PC to me has windows on it and a ‘regular computer’ is just DOS:) (oh, and an ancient apple II) And our SO is always doing computer stuff about the house, so I guess you could help that way! If he changes the kitchen make sure you put it back the right way, ok? And if I’m going to be astri and write your term paper, I’d have to know what the topic is and the scope (broad and shallow or deep and narrow, historical review of the literature or just dive right in with appropriate references, etc.) and the intended audience (e.g., what’s the prof’s take on the subject). I’ve never done any post-doc work or any graduate psych work or any clinically-related undergraduate psych work, but hey, why let minor details like that get in the way? <g
You’re getting way too complicated here! All you need to know is; should you use big words or little ones, does the prof want you to quote hir ‘brillance’ or can you make sense, and is this a topic that _really_ matters or is it the kind you can just blather about and then forget? – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – nope, don’t have to write a dissertation. not another one. nope nope nope
I’m glad.
As I said, I’ve never done any post-doc work, so I don’t know what is involved. I’m glad that it seems to be easier than getting your doctorate. (: I hate writing papers! I’d much rather write posts!!!!!! … well, it’s not that bad, it’s just that there are certain folks who have become easily bored with the schoolwork and start tugging at the edges of the mind, and then they *complain* cuz it’s taking me too long to do the stoopid stuff cuz I can’t *concentrate* and get down to *write* it. *sheesh*
I’ll apologize in advance for those of you who will want to hit me for this suggestion
I’d let the ones who get bored do the illustrations:) It should _really_ help your grade if you decorate your paper before turning it in!!!! *RC runs like crazy* Yeah, I always had trouble writing papers for grad school, too. Usually bc I had little interest in the topic. OTOH, if I was interested, it was pretty easy. forget the pits let’s all just move into RC’s puters
Good, idea, except I think NOJ may be right: it could be really noisy in there. RC, do you have lots of those really good industrial- strength ear phone thinggies so that we won’t go deaf? And I guess we’d all have to learn to sign. You do have chocolate in your mainframe, right RC? <g And if I’m going to be astri and write your term paper, I’d have to know what the topic is and the scope (broad and shallow or deep and narrow, historical review of the literature or just dive right in with appropriate references, etc.) and the intended yes :)
yes, as in, all of the above? Just how long are these term papers, astri? I can’t do an extensive review of the literature in less than maybe ten pages, and an extensive, in-depth discussion of a particular topic usually takes even longer. audience (e.g., what’s the prof’s take on the subject). I’ve he’s right
Aren’t they all? (That’s why I asked. <g) Hey, RC, what’s the DSM-IV number for delusions of omniscience? Do you think that therps are missing a great opportunity to treat all those profs out there? Maybe we could get the profs to go to the therps now that you’ve figured out a way for none of us to ever go to therapy again. <g Or was that someone else (not that it matters anymore, since we’re switching identities within the ng now <g). Yeah, I always had trouble writing papers for grad school, too. Usually bc I had little interest in the topic. OTOH, if I was interested, it was pretty easy. but what if you are more interested in something else?
More interested in something besides term papers? Is this possible? <g You know I tend to relate *solely* on an abstract level. Besides, fear is a great motivator for me. I was always afraid that if I flunked out I’d never be able to repay my huge student loans, and my occupational prospects without the otherwise worthless piece of paper were pretty bleak. Fear seemed to work for a lot of my classmates, too, judging from the number of ppl furiously typing at 3 AM on the morning before a paper was due. <g … who said anything about not posting? :) we compromise I write some and then we all get to play on line. problem is getting them to agree on how much is enough. Yeah, I bet they think that enough is much less when it comes to writing your term papers than when it comes to posting. It’s hard to work when you can play instead. <g yeah. what would I do if I didn’t have them as an excuse? ;)
Well, I’m lost here, astri (what a shock!). (; Does them refer to your internal kids (or adults) or does it refer to the term papers? If it refers to the internal kids, I don’t see any problem. I’ve always been great at procrastinating (and my SO is even better). Obviously so was about one-third of my grad school class (the ones furiously typing at 3 or 4 or 9 AM of the morning a paper was due) <g. If it refers to your term papers, you’d probably post even more, but might enjoy it less (since it wouldn’t be a forbidden pleasure) <g. And I think you might want to consider RC’s idea (hey RC, are you still RC today? <g) of just putting a bunch of asd posts together. (They don’t have to be yours, since so many of us are eager to trade identities anyway; you could just be RC when you are using one of her posts <g.) I’d cut and paste lots of ppl’s posts and depending on the prof, either edit them to make them flow smoothly or make sure that the transitions between the cuts were really choppy (bc some of the profs really seem to be into the surrealistic bit; they somehow seemed to believe that it indicated brilliance or at least a post-modern hipness that reflected the discontinuities of our age <g). Anyway, good luck! Oh and maybe you can let your littles draw all your charts and diagrams (if you use those). Tables seem kind of dull for littles (and bigs), though. (I stole this idea from RC, but maybe I can be her today so it’s not really stealing or anything – how’s that for a great rationalization? <g). e — For more information about this service, send e-mail to:

Dissertation… that’s what I’m supposed to be doing! Millions of people do that- I should still have time to post, right???? Of _course_ I should!!! Everyone _should_ have time to post, but I don’t. Here’s the big problem… I switched advisors & projects after 2 years (I _hated_ him, and I’m very happy now!) which means that I’m 2 years behind. And I have prelims in January! On a totally different subject that what I had been studying! *cram*cram*cram* And I’m writing a new proposal! And I’m revising a paper for publication which also must be done by January! And I’m supposed to write up the results of my old research for my old advisor who I hate, but I _really_ don’t want to., ALthough I would like to get a publication or two out of it, and salvage _something_ from the two years I spent. EEEEEK! So, to put it briefly, I’m BUSY. RC, have you ever: (1) had a prof that didn’t want you to use big words (preferably a paraphrase, or even better if they like you, a derivative, of hirs?), (2) had a prof that didn’t want you to reflect hir brilliance, not by a direct quote, generally, but by a digestion and regurgitation of their material (and their heroes’ or heroines’ material, assuming that they can admit that they actually learned or at least derived in some substantial way some of their own brilliant ideas from someone else, which is definitely *not* safe to assume but must be carefully probed for during the course of the term), or (3) had to write a term paper on something that really mattered (not that I didn’t pretend that it did when I wrote the paper, bc the profs usually acted like it did)? I _always_ wrote papers on topics that mattered whenever I had the chance to. If they gave me the topic I did it their way, if I got to pick the topic I did it my way. Probably one reason I got such bizarre grades
(certainly not the only one considering three of us were responsible for getting educated so it also depended on _who_ wrote the paper:) I think I had one prof who actually wanted to hear my ideas, and I’m pretty sure that he thought I was brilliant (at least when it came to the field he was teaching). I was just considered unstable or something *big grin* My grad school was small enough that all the profs knew all the students and I think I scared the profs!
I’m not really sure _what_ they thought of me but I do know they kept bending the rules to make sure I could get through all the red tape and get out of that school! *hee hee* For example, I went into the hospital to have a nervous breakdown and had to leave three classes to do it. So I just told the profs that, point blank. In one class (it was a class on how to do ‘group’ and it was an actual group therapy) I told the whole class. One teacher just told me I got an ‘a’ and not to worry about it, one prof told me to just contact him when I was ready and he’d tell me how to finish the class (I ended up having to do a paper summarizing what I had learned from the class for that ‘a’), and the third (who was also my advisor) had me finish the book and take the test _before_ I went into the hospital (I only got a ‘b-’ in that class!) which I did in two days. _That_ shook him up!!!! When I got out of the hospital I called my advisor and told him I was ready to do my thesis. He was speechless *grin* For my orals I was supposed to defend my thesis before a board of three profs. One called in sick, one was late and acted afraid of me, and my advisor asked me almost impossible questions that had nothing to do with my thesis. But I got an ‘a’
(probably freaked them out that I did my thesis on dissociation) – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -So for most of us drones, its read all the prof’s stuff and all the references therein, figure out a new way to say it that’s not too boring, figure out if they want a theoretical discussion or real-life applications (or both), whether they want a historical discussion or lots of empirical data, etc., etc., etc. and just throw the SOS back at them, preferably in some interesting and clear manner. <g IMO, it’s not really conducive to learning anything (for either the student or the prof), but hey, it gets you the piece of paper you need. I’d let the ones who get bored do the illustrations:) It should _really_ help your grade if you decorate your paper before turning it in!!!! *RC runs like crazy* heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee :) Great idea, RC! I like it, I like it! Let’s do lunch, babe. <g Preferably somewhere that has crayons and paper table cloths that you can draw on. (: I’ll miss your posts. ): But, I am glad that you will write the paper instead of posting if that’s what you need to do…. who said anything about not posting? :) we compromise I write some and then we all get to play on line. problem is getting them to agree on how much is enough. Yeah, e, remember when astri ‘wasn’t posting here’ and just lerking?
There were plenty of posts then! *grin* Yeah, I harassed her about that in another post earlier this week. She posts more when she’s lurking than I do when I’m not. <g I was actually hoping that all that lurking practice would allow her to post less, but I think she’s just gotten better at bouncing back and forth between work and posting. Which may be even better (as long as she gets her papers done <g). (: Good job, astri!
Yeah, I’ve noticed that she’s almost up to my recommended daily number of posts. *hee hee* Hmm, wonder if she’s just dissociating so that she can do all this? Nah, I don’t think she has a problem with _that_. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – how ppl sposd a no ur lerkin if you don tell em?
We’d miss your posts, astri. Really. You don’t have to tell us you are lurking. But you can if you want.
Yeah, I bet they think that enough is much less when it comes to writing your term papers than when it comes to posting. It’s hard to work when you can play instead. <g No No No! You have the wrong slant on this! THis isn’t _playing_, it’s _therapy_ and it’s good for you! You really should participate in this group regularly _every_ day for your healing! *RC, fully aware that she’s gone totally off the deep end on this one:)* I disagree, RC. My therp thinks that posting here really is good for my healing. He said so yesterday! And you can play with my pool toys. Did you bring any, too? <g
OOh, how about a kaluha flavored margarita? hmm *RC wanders off to see if she can make this for real* can we come too? Yes, yes, yes! Alright! A pool party. Being off in the deep end sure beats being in the pits. (: Anyone else want to come?

You guys are definitely nuts (in the nicest way, of course). Here I am, in a _real_ funk, working desperately to get the computer humming again and having had a horrid day at work and blowing up at everyone at home and I come to this ng hoping that I’ll be able to read something that I might indentify with, and what do I find? ?Giggles?? Joy? Friendship? Boy! Talk about wrecking a good funk. I just don’t know what I am going to do… – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – posted and e-mailed (: [...] You’re getting way too complicated here! All you need to know is; should you use big words or little ones, does the prof want you to quote hir ‘brillance’ or can you make sense, and is this a topic that _really_ matters or is it the kind you can just blather about and then forget? yup, be brilliant, tell him what he wants to hear, and say nothing in the process :) RC, have you ever: (1) had a prof that didn’t want you to use big words (preferably a paraphrase, or even better if they like you, a derivative, of hirs?), (2) had a prof that didn’t want you to reflect hir brilliance, not by a direct quote, generally, but by a digestion and regurgitation of their material (and their heroes’ or heroines’ material, assuming that they can admit that they actually learned or at least derived in some substantial way some of their own brilliant ideas from someone else, which is definitely *not* safe to assume but must be carefully probed for during the course of the term), or (3) had to write a term paper on something that really mattered (not that I didn’t pretend that it did when I wrote the paper, bc the profs usually acted like it did)? I _always_ wrote papers on topics that mattered whenever I had the chance to. If they gave me the topic I did it their way, if I got to pick the topic I did it my way. Probably one reason I got such bizarre grades
(certainly not the only one considering three of us were responsible for getting educated so it also depended on _who_ wrote the paper:) I think I had one prof who actually wanted to hear my ideas, and I’m pretty sure that he thought I was brilliant (at least when it came to the field he was teaching). In grad school, only the brilliant students could safely express their own ideas or write on a topic that they thought was important. We had one person in my class (definitely not me) who was deemed brilliant by the profs. The last one before him had studied there 25 or 30 years before I did (according to one of the really big gun profs). I was just considered unstable or something *big grin* My grad school was small enough that all the profs knew all the students and I think I scared the profs!
I’m not really sure _what_ they thought of me but I do know they kept bending the rules to make sure I could get through all the red tape and get out of that school! *hee hee*
bending the rules, or recognizing someone who was making real efforts at her education? For example, I went into the hospital to have a nervous breakdown and had to leave three classes to do it. _That_ shook him up!!!!
he made you complete the book and take the test _prior_ to your hospitalization? hmmm…incredible. I’m shaken up that you were able to apply yourself and get a B-. Way to go (and btw, was he as unsympathetic as he sounds?) When I got out of the hospital I called my advisor and told him I was ready to do my thesis. He was speechless *grin* For my orals I was supposed to defend my thesis before a board of three profs. One called in sick, one was late and acted afraid of me, and my advisor asked me almost impossible questions that had nothing to do with my thesis. But I got an ‘a’
(probably freaked them out that I did my thesis on dissociation)

Ok, I seem to have developed a new talent. This is the second person who has listed me as someone responsible for ruining their perfectly good funk (hey, AR how you doing?:) Think this has any career potential?

Well, e and I *hee hee, e you should have picked ‘i’ for your nickname* did do lunch once. I don’t remember that we did much brainstorming (other than the lengthy discussion on confusing it was to find the restaurant and whether we were going to be able to get out of the parking lot without getting lost:) but it sure was FUN! it’s good to be back with you folks. yep indeedy. trillium
