BAPHOMET XI System of the O.T.O. from Magick Without Tears This letter first appeared in Magick Without Tears (Hampton, N.J.: Thelema, 1954).–H.B. Cara Soror, Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law. YOU INFORM ME that the Earnest Inquirer of your ambit has been asking you to explain the difference between the A…A… and the O.T.O.; and that although your own mind is perfectly clear about it, you find it impossible to induce a similar lucidity in his. You would add that he is not (as one might at first suppose) a moron. And will I please do what I can about it? Well, here’s the essential difference ab ovo usque ad mala the A…A… concerns the individual, his development, his initiation, his passage from “Student” to “Ipsissimus”; he has no contact of any kind with any other person except the Neophyte who introduces him, and any Student or Students whom he may, after becoming a Neophyte, introduce. The details of this “Pilgrim’s Progress” are very fully set forth in One Star in Sight; and I should indeed be stupid and presumptuous to try to do better than that. But it is true that with regard to the O.T.O. there is no similar manual of instruction. In the Manifesto, and other Official Pronunciamenti, there are, it is true, what ought to be adequate data; but I quite understand they are not as ordered and classified as one would wish; there is certainly room for a simple elementary account of the origins of the Order, of its principles, of its methods, of its design, of the Virtue of its successive Grades. This I will now try to supply, at least in a brief outline. Let us begin at the beginning. What is a Dramatic Ritual? It is a celebration of the Adventures of the God whom it is intended to invoke. (The Bacchae of Euripides is a perfect example of this.) Now, in the O.T.O., the object of the ceremonies being the Initiation of the Candidate, it is he whose Path in Eternity is displayed in dramatic form. What is the Path? 1. The Ego is attracted to the Solar System. 2. The Child experiences Birth. 3. The Man experiences Life. 4. He experiences Death. 5. He experiences the World beyond Death. 6. This entire cycle of Point-Events is withdrawn into Annihilation. In the O.T.O. these successive stages are represented as follows: 1. P.I. 1. 0 (Minerval) 2. I (Initiation) 3. II (Consecration) 4. III (Devotion) 5. IV (Perfection, or Exaltation) 6. P.I. (Perfect Initiate) Of these Events or Stations upon the Path all but three (II) are single critical experiences. We, however, are concerned mostly with the very varied experiences of Life. All subsequent Degrees of the O.T.O. are accordingly elaborations of the II, since in a single ceremony it is hardly possible to sketch, even in the briefest outline, the Teaching of Initiates with regard to Life. The Rituals V-n-IX are then instructions to the Candidate how he should conduct himself; and they confer upon him, gradually, the Magical Secrets which make him Master of Life. To return for a moment to that question of Secrecy: there is no rule to prevent you from quoting against me such of my brighter remarks as “Mystery is the enemy of Truth”; but, for one thing, I am, and always have been, the leader of the Extreme Left in the Council- Chamber of the City of the Pyramids, so that if I acquiesce at all in the system of the O.T.O. so far as the “secret of secrets” of the IX is concerned, it is really on a point of personal honour. My pledge given to the late Frater Superior and O.H.O., Dr. Theodor Reuss. For all that, in this particular instance it is beyond question a point of common prudence, both because the abuse of the Secret is, at least on the surface, so easy and so tempting, and because, if it became a matter of general knowledge the Order itself might be in danger of calumny and persecution; for the secret is even easier to misinterpret than to profane. "Liber 777" on the Cheap. Copyright (c) 1979    Since we have a class on "Liber 777" this month, I thought I would resurrect an article I wrote for the old "O.T.O. Newsletter" about eleven years ago.  This first appeared in the May 1978 e.v. double issue # 7-8.  The issue is long out of print, but some considerations are afoot to put the "Newsletter" into computer format and possibly make it available again in photocopy.  The "O.T.O. Newsletter" was the precursor of the "Magical Link"; and it was in publication until the last issue in 1980 e.v., # 10-11.  The poor beasty died of obesity, with the last issue going to 120 pages, including four-color cover.  Much as I liked doing it, that was a bit much for the press in the room behind my kitchen.  Hope you like it. Notes on: "Liber 777"                          Column XL on a small budget:                              semi-precious stones                              by Fr. AMTh    Many of us have wished to set gems into talismans and other devices in correspondence to the Sephiroth.  This is workable in most of the correspondences listed in "777", Col. XL, but diamonds and a few other stones are beyond the means of most of us.  One can use chips, of course; but size counts for much in workings of one kind or another.  It is better to have a stone that matches the working, is large enough to be seen and is not a plastic or glass fake.  With these ideas in mind, the following table of semi- precious gems and minerals is offered. Notes follow to clarify the selections and to provide instruction on the principle of magical signatures. Notes:  #1. Milky Quartz is featureless white, a match to the white Brilliance of      Keter.  Quartz with gold inclusions is white flecked Gold, also a color      symbol of Keter.  #2. Mother of Pearl is the color match of Chokmah.  #3. An Apache Tear is usually a small round stone of black hue.  It transmits      a little light and gives a feeling of endless depth.  This stone was      sacred to South-Western American Indians.  The reference to Binah is by      color and mystical properties.  #4. Blue Azurite matches the blue of Chesed.  This is a copper ore, and can      be used to link Netzach with Chesed — definitely a right-pillar stone      for the Tree of Life.  #5. Desert Rose is a flower-like crystal of granular Hematite.  it is dull      light russet in color and an iron ore.  Thus, rose = 5; reddish = color      of Geburah, iron = metal of Geburah.  #6. Citrine is a yellow golden gem like a drop of honey, thus Tipheret, gold      and Sun..  In darker hues this is sometimes called honey topaz, and a      large stone of this type was used by Crowley for scrying in his "Liber      418" working.  It is inexpensive, not like the rare true topaz.  I picked      up a 90 karat cut stone for about $100 some years ago.  Little ones go      for under  $10 — as do most entries in this list.  #7. Green Malachite is green in color and a Copper ore, thus Netzach.  #8. Cinnabar is reddish orange in color and an ore of Mercury, thus Hod.  #9. A Moon Stone is at first glance more for #13 and Gimmel than for #9 and      Yesod.  This follows from the transcendent appearance of this gem.  One      must not fall into the trap of thinking that one affinity determines      place forever.  The Moon and Yesod match a stone with the appearance of      the Full phase of the Moon.  While lesser gems might match the lower      place of Yesod, there are certain sexual mysteries of O.T.O. which      elevate this place.  The Moon Stone in its white form is like a drop of      semen leavened with the White Eagle.  Only through subsequent skilled      working can the gem be raised to #13.  This is an affinity quite close to      that of Binah and Malkut as Mother and fallen Bride in ancient Qabalah.      In a real way, these "budget" versions of Column XL can be thought of as      Green Lion to the Precious Stones’ Red Lion.  Those who aim directly for      the top without treading the way up often squander magical force. #10. Lava, basalt and granite are the bones of the Earth.  These stones are      the prima matter of the physical world. #11. Native Sulfur, not alchemical Sulfur, has an affinity to air and      therefore Aleph.  Native Sulfur in crystalline form is yellow (Aleph) and      sublimates (turns into gas from the solid state). #12. Feather Agate (also called Tree Agate), contains brilliant plumes of      color in a clear and colorless stone.  These are like the forces      manipulated within the Magician by the art hidden within the letter Bet. #13. Satin Spar is a stone that looks like a fall of crystalline rain.  It is      a perfect depiction of the descending influence of the Moon. #14. Emerald Beryl can be bought from a lapidary as an opaque crystal for $8      to $20.  It is the green gem of Venus. #15. Red serpentine has a muted red, for Hay, and is chemically like asbestos      to protect against fire. #16. Brown Obsidian is often ribboned in black.  If all the surface of the      earth were melted, this stuff would result.  Vau is union. #17. Alexandrite (artificial variation of carborundum, not natural      Alexandrite; the natural stone is fully on a par with the finest diamonds      in cost):  For Zain, Gemini, this artificial stone is an easy      correspondence.  The natural stone has some optical properties not to be      found in the artificial, but both natural and artificial produce a      reddish color in artificial light and a green one in daylight.  This dual      coloring is the Gemini matching.  The property is more extreme in the      artificial stone.  In addition, the idea of art bettering nature has some      affinity to the path of Zain on the Tree of Life. #18. Chet is color matched to Amber in the symbolic King Scale.  This      substance is also used in the regular table XL.  Amber may contain and      preserve objects within itself — Cancer’s facility of containment. #19. The Cat’s Eye simulates the eye of the serpent, Tet, and the eye of the      Lion, the Tet Beast of Tarot. #20. Peridot is yellowish Green; a Virgo = Yod color in the King Scale. #21. Turquoise has the color of Jupiter, and myth grants it the status of a      fallen part of the sky.  This stone is sometimes used to protect or      measure the health of a person wearing it.  Turquoise of a white-veiled      type changes its color at times, like the passage of a cloud upon the      mystical sky of its wearer.  A strong case of #13 could also be made      here, for Turquoise or Lapis dust was the pigment used by the Egyptians      on the Stele of Revealing for the Body of Nuit.  This was once blue, but      now is green.  Turquoise and Lapis Lazuli gradually change to a variation      of malachite with exposure to air.  Thus mystically, Nuit Virgin becomes      Nuit Mother.  There is a strong feminine side to the God Jupiter, which      is often overlooked.  Jupiter is the Sire of Dionysus, but also the      birthing Mother.  Athena was born from the head of Zeus. #22. Lace Agate shows a balance of chemical forces, thus Libra and Lamed. #23. Moss Agate looks like an undersea view, thus Water and Mem. #24. Aquamarine represents the mystical waters of re-birth in its color and      clarity.  Scorpio and Nun also stress this. #25. Flint is the stone of Arrows and therefore Sagittarius, Samekh.  The      power of this stone to strike fire also applies to this path. #26. Fluorescent Minervals, when exposed to the proper wavelengths of ultra-      violet light or black light, glow with "unnatural" colors.        The      application to Ayin = Eye should be clear, especially when taken with the      King Scale color and the Devil Trump. #27. Blood Stone is a dull black or green flecked with red, like blood      splattered on ebony.  This stone is traditionally the talisman of storms,      earthquake, disaster, violence of all kinds and destroying sickness —      either to cause or cure.  The affinity to Peh as the letter of the Tower      Trump should be obvious. #28. Rutilated Quartz is a stone shot through with perfect lines of bright      metallic crystal.  The link to Tzaddi can be made in many ways, but the      clearest in my view is to Tzaddikim, the Perfect Watchers or Secret      Chiefs. #29. Fossils show the course of evolution and therefore match the Moon Trump      and the path of Qof.  In selecting a fossil, choose one that represents a      known evolutional line to the present living species.  If from a      vertebrate, part of the back of the skull.  Fossil bones and remains from      extinct Genera, like Saurians, are more correct to represent the Qlipot.      In that line, I have a nice Stegasaurous bone that I libate with beer or      wine at intervals.  It keeps the

The "sell it     by zealot" technique. True believers and mass movements.     Persuasion techniques: "Yes set," "Imbedded Commands," "Shock     and Confusion," and the "Interspersal Technique." Subliminals.     Vibrato and ELF waves. Inducing trance with vibrational sound.     Even professional observers will be "possessed" at charismatic     gatherings. The medium for mass take-over.         I’m Dick Sutphen and this tape is a studio-recorded,     expanded version of a talk I delivered at the World Congress     of Professional Hypnotists Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada.     Although the tape carries a copyright to protect it from     unlawful duplication for sale by other companies, in this     case, I invite individuals to make copies and give them to     friends or anyone in a position to communicate this     information.          Although I’ve been interviewed about the subject on many     local and regional radio and TV talk shows, large-scale mass     communication appears to be blocked, since it could result in     suspicion or investigation of the very media presenting it or     the sponsors that support the media. Nor do the     Born-Again Christian movement, cults, and many human-potential     trainings.         Everything I will relate only exposes the surface of the     problem. I don’t know how the misuse of these techniques can     be stopped. I don’t think it is possible to legislate against     that which often cannot be detected; and if those who     legislate are using these techniques, there is little hope of     affecting laws to govern usage. I do know that the first step     to initiate change is to generate interest. In this case, that     will probably only result from an underground effort.         In talking about this subject, I am talking about my own     business.  I know it, and I know how effective it can be. I     produce hypnosis and subliminal tapes and, in some of my     seminars, I use conversion tactics to assist participants to     become independent and self-sufficient. But, anytime I use     these techniques, I point out that I am using them, and those     attending have a choice to participate or not. They also know     what the desired result of participation will be.         So, to begin, I want to state the most basic of all facts     about brainwashing: IN THE ENTIRE HISTORY OF MAN, NO ONE HAS     EVER BEEN BRAINWASHED AND REALIZED, OR BELIEVED, THAT HE HAD     BEEN BRAINWASHED.  Those who have been brainwashed will     usually passionately defend their manipulators, claiming they     have simply been "shown the light" . . .  or have been     transformed in miraculous ways.     The Birth of Conversion        CONVERSION is a "nice" word for BRAINWASHING . . . and any     study of brainwashing has to begin with a study of Christian     revivalism in eighteenth century America. Apparently, Jonathan     Edwards accidentally discovered the techniques during a     religious crusade in 1735 in Northampton, Massachusetts.  By     inducing guilt and acute apprehension and by increasing the     tension, the "sinners" attending his revival meetings would     break down and completely submit. Technically, what Edwards     was doing was creating conditions that wipe the brain slate     clean so that the mind accepts new programming. The problem     was that the new input was negative. He would tell them,     "You’re a sinner!  You’re destined for hell!"         As a result, one person committed suicide and another     attempted suicide.  And the neighbors of the suicidal converts     related that they, too, were affected so deeply that, although     they had found "eternal salvation," they were obsessed with a     diabolical temptation to end their own lives.         Once a preacher, cult leader, manipulator or authority     figure creates the brain phase to wipe the brain-slate clean,     his subjects are wide open. New input, in the form of     suggestion, can be substituted for their previous ideas.     Because Edwards didn’t turn his message positive until the end     of the revival, many accepted the negative suggestions and     acted, or desired to act, upon them.         Charles J. Finney was another Christian revivalist who     used the same techniques four years later in mass religious     conversions in New York. The techniques are still being used     today by Christian revivalists, cults, human-potential     trainings, some business rallies, and the United States Armed     Services . . . to name just a few.         Let me point out here that I don’t think most revivalist     preachers realize or know they are using brainwashing     techniques. Edwards simply stumbled upon a technique that     really worked, and others copied it and have continued to copy     it for over two hundred years. And the more sophisticated our     knowledge and technology become, the more effective the     conversion. I feel strongly that this is one of the major     reasons for the increasing rise in Christian fundamentalism,     especially the televised variety, while most of the orthodox     religions are declining.     The Three Brain Phases         The Christians may have been the first to successfully     formulate brainwashing, but we have to look to Pavlov, the     Russian scientist, for a technical explanation. In the early     1900s, his work with animals opened the door to further     investigations with humans. After the revolution in Russia,     Lenin was quick to see the potential of applying Pavlov’s     research to his own ends.         Three distinct and progressive states of transmarginal     inhibition were identified by Pavlov. The first is the     EQUIVALENT phase, in which the brain gives the same response     to both strong and weak stimuli. The second is the PARADOXICAL     phase, in which the brain responds more actively to weak     stimuli than to strong. And the third is the ULTRA-     PARADOXICAL phase, in which conditioned responses and behavior     patterns turn from positive to negative or from negative to     positive.         With the progression through each phase, the degree of     conversion becomes more effective and complete. The way to     achieve conversion are many and varied, but the usual first     step in religious or political brainwashing is to work on the     emotions of an individual or group until they reach an     abnormal level of anger, fear, excitement, or nervous tension.         The progressive result of this mental condition is to     impair judgement and increase suggestibility. The more this     condition can be maintained or intensified, the more it     compounds. Once catharsis, or the first brain phase, is     reached, the complete mental takeover becomes easier. Existing     mental programming can be replaced with new patterns of     thinking and behavior.         Other often-used physiological weapons to modify normal     brain functions are fasting, radical or high sugar diets,     physical discomforts, regulation of breathing, mantra chanting     in meditation, the disclosure of awesome mysteries, special     lighting and sound effects, programed response to incense, or     intoxicating drugs.         The same results can be obtained in contemporary     psychiatric treatment by electric shock treatments and even by     purposely lowering a person’s blood sugar level with insulin     injections.         Before I talk about exactly how some of the techniques are     applied, I want to point out that hypnosis and conversion     tactics are two distinctly different things–and that     conversion techniques are far more powerful. However, the two     are often mixed . . . with powerful results.     How Revivalist Preachers Work         If you’d like to see a revivalist preacher at work, there     are probably several in your city. Go to the church or tent     early and sit in the rear, about three-quarters of the way     back. Most likely repetitive music will be played while the     people come in for the service. A repetitive beat, ideally     ranging from 45 to 72 beats per minute (a rhythm close to the     beat of the human heart), is very hypnotic and can generate an     eyes-open altered state of consciousness in a very high     percentage of people. And, once you are in an alpha state, you     are at least 25 times as suggestible as you would be in full     beta consciousness. The music is probably the same for every     service, or incorporates the same beat, and many of the people     will go into an altered state almost immediately upon entering     the sanctuary.  Subconsciously, they recall their state of     mind from previous services and respond according to the     post-hypnotic programming.         Watch the people waiting for the service to begin. Many     will exhibit external signs of trance–body relaxation and     slightly dilated eyes. Often, they begin swaying back and     forth with their hands in the air while sitting in their     chairs. Next, the assistant pastor will probably come out. He     usually speaks with a pretty good "voice roll."     Voice Roll Technique         A "voice roll" is a patterned, paced style used by     hypnotists when inducing a trance. They point to a better world         for all humans and especially for the Changelings.                           INTRODUCTION TO CYBERCRAFT      Up to this point in human history WoMankind has taken itself to  the brink of  doom and  returned with  most of our  parts intact.  That is  our  physical members are somewhat healthy. But our minds, our psyches have suffered.  And we are racing toward the time of mutation. Some  of  humanities minds are mutating already.  These minds and  the resulting  bodies will  offer us  a map into our future.      The future calls us.  It calls us  in a silent  voice from  the primordial deeps of our genetics and minds. The very chemicals which make up our minds and bodies are signaling a nearing  of the time of  transition.  It will be upon us soon and if we aren’t prepared for the  Changelings to manifest some humans may well start another  series of witch hunts  to eliminate these  precious few new humans. Indeed it is in the best interest of  Four Circuit humans to stifle the advantageous mutations. Otherwise Four Circuit humans will be quickly overcome.      Already the Changelings may be about. Their wisdom has alerted them to the possibility  of persecution.  The Hidden Ones do  well to keep their  existence unknown until the time of Knowing has been reached.      But  we all  won’t  mutate  together or  at  the  same  time.  We  have  a responsibility to those that will follow us to create a framework in which they may progress toward positive results. It is to these  ends that the authors are creating a framework to take  Eight Circuit humans into  and beyond the time of transition.      With a small electro-chemical voice we are being urged to communicate with you the possibilities of the current  mind mutation. From this brief amateurish work  we will develop a framework  to  help assist  all  inquiring Four Circuit humans on the path to the next stage of transition. CyberCraft is a path toward the transition.  It is  not the only  path either. And  indeed we will probably discover competing  organizations.  Some  may hinder, others   may   assist the transition. From our pursers we ask only to be left alone  in peace. We are not going to harm, only progress. Peace to you and yours.      Hence we  present you with a viable  framework to approach the transition. That framework is CyberCraft. The craft of piloting oneself through troubles to reach the point of transition.      This is  the first printed  introduction and explanation of CyberCraft. In Colorado Springs on October 6th of 1987, I was initiated into an eclectic coven of Witches. Previously I was an ardent Born Again Christian from the Bible Belt of the  South. Over time  I  came to discover  the Christian Belief System, the CBS,  didn’t  satisfy my personal  needs. However after  personal searching and synchronous meetings I was accepted into an intimate group of exciting and very wonderfully witchey people.      Two years later in 1989 I felt that the  most important and  life changing aspects of  Witchcraft  were being misrepresented.  American  Witchcraft, among many other things, is an  adaptation of a primitive form  of group therapy,  of extending one’s immediate family, of  resource  sharing and most importantly, a better way  of thinking.   But  even after   many years of   practice, longtime initiates seem to not understand the basis of American Witchcraft.      Herein is the first publication of  CyberCraft, an addition  and update to American Witchcraft. CyberCraft is not meant to  replace Wicca or the Craft. It is meant to interpret  the  metaphor further and  provide the needed   time and energy for other deeply needed works.      That’s at least what this  author perceives. I’m   sure I’ll receive  some criticism for trying to add to or improve American Witchcraft.      Which  brings up the  very valid question. Why  attempt to update American Witchcraft when it seems to be doing so well?  There  are many reasons. Some of them are: o    to provide a more expansive framework for the initiates to work in. o    to accelerate the trend toward some magikal social threshold, o    to emphasize the really interesting aspects of the craft, o    to further empower the individual, o    to streamline the philosophy, o    to bring it more in line with current psychology, o    to weld the cosmology with current and progressive astronomy and physics         and finally, o    to provide a more reasonable path of personal growth while having fun.      These are just some of the reasons. We also have a duty to align ourselves with the future,  to  protect and nurture  the new arrivals. Among our children will come the Changelings. And if we gain the power to reincarnate purposefully we ourselves may indeed become The Children of the Changelings.      The first chapter is the proposal. This has  been  published in draft form on  several national  computer networks   as Cyber Wicca.    However after some lengthy discussion with my partner we  came to the conclusion  that Cyber Wicca was too limiting and not descriptive enough of our efforts. The  real commodity is now in your hands as CyberCraft.      The second chapter  is a description  of the  lower four  bio- circuits as talked about  by   Robert  Anton Wilson, a.k.a.   RAW. These   bio-circuits are extremely  important   when   considering  CyberCraft.   I    feel it of  vital significance to begin to understand how and why  we think  what we think, which of course, causes us to do.      Chapter Three is Darkmoor. Previously  written about as Chapel Perilous we find it more interesting to call it Darkmoor.      Chapter Four is  of  the upper  four circuits.  These   are  the modes  or circuits  which  we are all progressing   toward. For  once I  feel  we have an intelligent and useful map of our futures. History will be written in reference of what Leary  and Wilson have framed  it in. And because of  the Semantic-Time Binding nature of the written word, we’ll all benefit.      There are other articles beyond these. Their purpose will be apparent upon reading them.      Welcome  to  CyberCraft. We hope that  the   tradition  will solidify in a satisfying  way,  offering the  participants  many advantages  and insights for piloting their little ships through chaotic seas.                           CYBERCRAFT — The Proposal CyberCraft–An Interpretative Metaphor      Welcome to the CyberCraft Manual. We hope you will enjoy  and benefit from this little exploration into the  majikal mind-body complex.  Our purpose is to help others  operate at higher levels  on all  planes of   life.  It  isn’t our purpose  to help them just feel  better. Witchcraft has  some very positive and life affirming teachings. The authors of this document  hope to interpret those metaphors bringing them into a  late 20th century  framework from which  we can springboard into the 21st century.      However we have strong forces  to  compete against.  The first struggle we are involved   with is one of  the  mind-body complex.   Who   will control our mind-bodies?  Will it be the Aspirant,  the  one looking  for a better life, or will it be  the Controllers, the ones with  the  power and  monies to mold  our minds to their purposes? And will  we nurture the  emerging Changelings?  Or do we let the Persecutors administer the Last Rite to our offspring?      CyberCraft is not meant to be an end in itself.   CyberCraft is the art of living smart.  We hope  that it will  offer the Aspirant the options  needed to create  a  better world to  live   in.   Additionally CyberCraft   is a psycho- spiritual   metaphor  for the  21st   century.   This metaphor   is based  upon embodiment  spirituality  whereas    others  are    based   upon  disembodiment spirituality.      CyberCraft  is  the art of  living that integrates rational and irrational process through mythopoetic structures primarily  from Wicca, then neo-Paganism and other related religious belief  systems.  It  should  incorporate knowledge from   newer  and  emerging  humanistic    sciences.  Principles   of   ethical self-programming as written  of  by Timothy  Leary,  John Lilly,   Robert Anton Wilson, Antero Alli,  and Christopher  Hyatt  should  be incorporated into  the relational   processes; those setting   between  solar   and  lunar  knowledge. CyberCraft is a self-modifying tradition.  It  will  change as culture changes. CyberCraft  is  also a psycho-spiritual  metaphor which will generate, sanctify and venerate the necessary tools for enjoying a healthy mind and body.      The  above mentioned authors  are helping to shed  light upon  our thought processes. The terms and structures they use should be considered metaphorical. But   they provide a viable framework   from  which  to build  a   newer,  more appropriate belief system for our times.      Humans seem to have a need to be both rational and irrational  at the same time.
